Left Reverse Manoeuvre
If you are asked to reverse around a corner on you left on test the examiner will ask you to pull up just before a junction they will then ask you to reverse into the road on the left making sure that you keep close to the kerb.
The whole purpose of this manoeuvre is to be able to reverse a car into a confined space on the left. It is important that you make appropriate observations and that your control of the car is good. You must make sure that you don't hit the kerb while doing this manoeuvre and also your car should not be too far away from the kerb.
When learning to do this manoeuvre with your driving instructor in Preston you will be taught how to control the car while reversing using good clutch control. Your driving instructor will teach you how to keep the car close to the kerb using the mirrors to help you however ensuring that you don't solely rely on them and make good observations. This will all help you in being able to complete the left reverse manoeuvre with as little fuss as possible.
Road to Reverse Into
When you have been asked to reverse into a side road you need to look at the road that you are going to be reversing into.
This means if it's a tight junction are you going to need to put a lot of steering on early and if it's a long sweeping corner how would you need to steer around that corner.
You should think how you would steer if you were coming out of that junction because it is exactly the same reversing into the junction.
Is it Safe?
Is it safe to reverse into the side road? As you drive past look into the road to make sure there is nothing that would cause a hazard.
If there is something that would cause any problem say something to the examiner. They are watching how you would deal with things if they weren't there. However if they feel it is safe they'll advise you to continue with the manoeuvre.
Use of mirrors
If you look into you passenger mirror you will be able to see the footpath and kerb stone behind the back of the car. This may not be ideal to judge your way around the corner.
Adjust you mirrors
To give you a better view of the kerb you should move your passenger mirror down so that you are able to see the side of the car and the kerb stone better.
This is allowed on test however you should just us your mirror to guide you around the corner you need to be making proper observations as you complete the manoeuvre.
Point of Turn
Reverse back until you reach the point of turn. This is when the kerb stone appears to be moving away from your car.
At this point you need to start to steer towards the kerb (left) as you begin to steer make sure that you make proper observations to both right and left as well as the road in which you are reversing into.
More or less Steering?
As you reverse into the side road the kerb stone may move in your wing mirror.
If the kerb starts to move away from your car then you need to steer more towards the kerb (left) if the kerb get closer you need to steer away from the kerb.
You should only ever need to get the steering to straight, you shouldn't need to steer right at any point while you are going around the corner.
Straightening Up
As you get into the new road the kerb on the left should start to straighten up as it does you will need to straighten your steering.
Need to get closer to Kerb?
If you are too far away from the kerb you may need to get a little closer.
To do this steer slightly left until you have a bit of an angle then straighten up you steering moving back until you are closer to the kerb then steer right to bring the front end across.
Remembering that you need to be close to the kerb but don't get too close that you end up hitting it.
Finishing Manoeuvre
Reverse back until you are a couple of car lengths into the new road. The whole purpose of this manoeuvre is for you to move off and turn right. However you may well be asked to move off and turn left. When asked to move off make sure that you make proper all round observations, you don't want all your hard work undone.
