Show and Tell Questions - Tyres
You may be asked one of two possible questions about the tyres on your car. Both of these questions will be tell questions you won't be expected to carry out a check of the tyres, however the examiner will do a visual check of the tyres before the test commences to make sure that the car is road worthy.
Tread Depth
Q - Tell me how you would check that your tyres have sufficient tread depth and that their condition is suitable for road use.
A - Tread depth should be 1.6mm across the centre 3/4 of the tyre and the full circumference, the tyre should have no cuts or bulges.
Tyre Pressures
Q - Tell me where you would find information on tyre pressures for this vehicle and how should tyre pressures be checked.
A - The information should be in the cars hand book and should be checked using a reliable pressure gauge.
Tyre Pressures and Tread Depth - Your Own Car
If you intend to use you own car for your test you must make sure that your tyres have sufficient tread depth and that they are fully inflated. If either of these are a problem when you turn up for test your test may be canceled and you will lose your test fee.
